Today, we honor the memory of the heroes of Kruty—young Ukrainians who, without hesitation, stood to defend their homeland. On January 29, 1918, near the small station of Kruty, young volunteers—mostly students and gymnasium students—alongside soldiers, faced an unequal battle against the Bolshevik advance on Kyiv. Outnumbered—just a few hundred against several thousand—they held the enemy back, buying precious time for Ukraine.
For our children, the Battle of Kruty has become a symbol of youthful heroism in the fight for Ukraine’s independence. Each year, commemorating the heroes of Kruty reminds students that freedom is never easily won, and that the courage of even a few can change the course of history.
